it's not like that at all. it's pretty much a world... under our world. it's where the core is, the will of the abyss, and where chains are born.
the core of the abyss is the very being of the abyss, it has its own personality. the will of the abyss is the girl who currently has the core inside her. chains are monsters baskervilles can safely contract, while non-baskervilles, if they contact them, will eventually be dragged into the abyss and will eventually change into a chain themselves.
until one stupid duke changed that and made a device that let normal people contract them. which was a very, very, very, very stupid idea, i will tell you that much.
children of misfortune are supposed to be sent to the abyss for being a threat. originally, we were told it was because their existence disturbed the balance of the abyss and the world, but know we know it is because they are a threat to the jurors.

ah, i suspected it! last time we met, had a sort of buzzing in my head, you see, possibly thought it was a sign for that.

sorry? for what? well, let me explain the buzzing, that is, at some point you will start to "feel" others' souls. imagine as if you are a radio tower, receiving signals. shades, other shades like us, they are similar to interference! it is not at all intrusive, just a sign others are gaining in on your territories, perhaps it is some sort of innate defense mechanism?
anyhow! that is remarkably different than my own transformation, i rather changed inside to out, not out to in. no floating on my end, either. the telekinesis and the arms and legs, yes, that i'm familiar with!
